A coalition of more than 100 North American dog trainers, certified animal behaviorists, veterinarians and other professionals worked for three years to produce and review this comprehensive guide. Delta Society funded the coalition's work through a grant from The Charles Engelhard Foundation. Suzanne Hetts, PhD, Certified Animal Behaviorist and Project Scientific Director explains,
"While the Standards are not proscriptive, meaning they do not advocate one specific method of training, they do promote reward-based training, while minimizing the use of aversive procedures. This stems from a commitment that, during training, both dogs and people should be treated with respect, that training should be fun, and that dogs should not be subjected to unnecessary discomfort or distress."
It is hoped that this material will have far-reaching influence, particularly in the area of pet dog training.
